Why this is a
Masterpiece

This vessel known as a Zun has a flaring mouth and a broad band of decoration around the waist with two bowstring lines above and below. The decoration consists of two coherent Tao-Tie masks defined in bold relief against a background of squared spirals. The shape and the decoration are both typical of the early Western Zhou period. The first of the ten characters comprising the Burrell Zun inscription is a clan sign in the form of paired crescents. The same paired crescents conclude the inscription on the British Museum’s most famous Chinese bronze, the Kang Hou Gui.

History of the Object
From the Song Dynasty, Chinese scholars and connoisseurs liked to collect bronzes, jades, paintings and ceramics. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, encyclopaedias of antiquities were published and in this way many objects became well known. The Burrell Zun appears in several Qing encyclopaedias, for it once formed part of a famous collection. Sir William Burrell is almost certainly the vessel’s first Western owner.
