Why this is a
Masterpiece

The formal simplicity of ornaments reveals some cultural tendencies which were widespread in the Middle East at that time. It is worth mentioning that these were the times of crusader wars and increase of Islamic religiousness. The modesty and simplicity in daily life was recommended in those days and today it is visible especially on the household vessels.

History of the Object
The small bowl represents an Arabic ceramic handicraft, esteemed for its artistic values especially in the field of ornamentation. Its decoration was painted in the manner of the so-called 'free brush', which became favoured and popularized by Syrian artists in the 12-13th century.

Function
Household utensil. The bowl has a carinated shape, typical for vessels produced in Syria during the reigns of the Ayyubids. Using the quartz ceramic paste (prepared probably in Egypt in the 12th century) is an essential feature of the Ayyubid ceramic wares. The bowl is decorated with stylized vegetal motifs – a lotus flower and a leaf – surrounded by rays. The composition is rather simple and quiet, nevertheless it distinctly corresponds with the artistic style of those days.
