Why this is a
Masterpiece

The overall composition as well as the details of the statue depicture dignity, benevolence and inner harmony. Gesture and expression convey comfort and assure that the Bodhisattva will take care of the child´s soul in afterlife.

History of the Object
The object was erected in the Genkoku-temple in the district of Awa on the island of Shikoku in 1665 to place the soul of a deceased child under the protection of the Bodhisattva Jiz_. Hans Mayer donated the statue, which he bought from the arts dealer Meyl, to the Ethnological Museum of Leipzig in 1908.
