Sheet Hanadori from the tea house Ogiya
AMM GR-6820
Download print email facebook twitter me2day

Why this is a
Masterpiece

The sheet represents an excellent example of the mitate-e – special style of combination of old classic themes of Japanese literature and 19th Century life in amusement districts.

History of the Object
The amusement districts in the cities had their own heroes and beauties, which citizens knew by name, like in this example where the famous courtesan Hanadori is depicted in a richly ornamented kimono. The poem of the famous Japanese poetess Ono no Komachi (ca.825-ca.900) is dedicated to the short period in which the beautiful cherry blossoms exist and likes it to the short period of the blossoming of female beauty. The sheet is also an advertisement for the tea house Ogiya, where the courtesan worked. The sheet is a good example of the creative work of Toyokuni II, who is one of the followers and pupils of Toyokuni I (1769- 1825). The artwork has the signature of its creator: Gosotei Toyokuni ga; censor seal: kiwame as well as a publishers seal: Yamamoto Kyubei.
