Why this is a
Masterpiece

The world’s museums are filled with countless objects that remain unseen by viewers for decades. One of the many reasons for this fate is a work’s condition or fragility, which prevents it from being exhibited. Contemplation of Chrysanthemum, a nineteenth-century scroll that tells a poetic story was precisely one of these works. But thanks to a successful partnership with China, and the virtuoso skill of the museum’s Chinese colleagues, heightened media attention was paid to the process of restoration: the process was filmed and written about, and the course of restoration was followed step by step. The work itself was uncovered, centimeter by centimeter, and the scroll was literally reborn under the hands of the restorers. When the work was finally exhibited, audiences fell in love with the traditional nineteenth-century scroll. A new masterpiece was born, which is now a permanent, and visible, part of the museum’s collection.

History of the Object
For decades, the work was in very poor technical condition, and could not be exhibited. In 2004, in collaboration with the restorers Yang Zehua, from the Palace Museum in Beijing, Zhu Pin Fang, from the Shanghai Museum, and Latvian graphics restorer Aija Brīvniece, the work underwent a process of restoration: the painting was dusted and cleaned, cracks and deformation were eliminated, and the silk foundation was replaced.
