In this painting the rocks were painted by Lan Ying, and the bamboos by Sun Da. This is a rare collaborative work by two painters dated to the transitional period of Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) Dynasties.

History of the Object
Bamboos and rocks were popular subjects in Chinese literati paintings since the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368).
