Why this is a
Masterpiece

Such large early Qur’an written on parchment are rare. The commissioning would have been a very expensive undertaking. There are only seven verses on thi and there are 6,000 more in the Qur'an. This particular folio is well written. The letters are well placed and some of the letter endings are stretched across the page to give the script a stately movement across the page. The absence of diacritical marks or vocalisation marks on this Qur’an segment indicates that it is an early example. This piece is the earliest Islamic artefact in the museum's collection.

History of the Object
This Qur’an folio is probably from the same monumental Qur’an which is housed in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Some scholars have suggested that this Qur’an could have been carried along the Silk Route. This Qur'an piece has been carbon-dated at Oxford and the results show 68% probability of a date between 640-705CE and 95% probability of a date between 595-855 CE.
