Why this is a
Masterpiece

The thick main ring is decorated with tortoise-shell and leaf patterns, executed in the graduation technique, which makes use of hundreds of tiny grains of gold. Earrings decorated with granulated gold were popular for a short time during the Silla period. The thick upper ring is made out of thin rolled gold plate which makes it less heavy than it looks. With a diameter of 3.5 cm, these are the biggest Silla gold earrings extant. The central ring connecting the upper ring with the pendant below is also decorated with a granulated leaf pattern. The pendants have 37 leaf-shaped spangles, which are hooked on a round loop weaved of chained small rings. The leaf-shaped spangles on the pendant and the lowermost ornament, also in the shape of a leaf, feature granulated gold decorations and magnificent adornments. It is designated as Korean National Treasure No. 90.

History of the Object
These thick gold earrings were found in Bubuchong(Tomb of Husband and Wife) in Bomun-dong, Gyeongju. They are among the most elaborate and magnificent gold earrings excavated from the Silla tombs. They show great artistic craftmanship and display the elegant taste of the Silla people as well as their high level of metalwork craftsmanship.
