Why this is a
Masterpiece

Working around the turn of the 20th century, Abdullah Suriosubroto painted naturalistic landscapes depicting idealised rural scenes. In An Indonesian Village at Sunset, Abdullah celebrates the beauty and richness of the Indonesian landscape by projecting the virtues and qualities of the rural peasantry whose lives are deeply intertwined with their land.

History of the Object
Popular during the first half of the 20th century, idyllic landscapes like this were criticised by a group of nationalist painters led by S Sudjojono. The term “Mooi Indie” (Beautiful Indies) school was used to describe such paintings, and criticised for their adherence to the commercial demands of the colonial and Javanese aristocrats.
