Why this is a
Masterpiece

Very few examples of Ottoman talismanic shirts survive to date; the most of them are in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul. They were ritually manufactured, sometimes made in response to a command by the Prophet. The present item is signed and dated by the artist. It differs from the others in the fact that it has a collar and in the geometrical arrangement of the Koranic writings decorating the tunic: magic squares, war prayers, suras and the "99 names of God”. Raimondo Montecuccoli stopped the advance of the Ottoman troops in Europe: the fact that our shirt was a war loot enhances its historical value.

History of the Object
First collected by Raimondo Montecuccoli (1609-1680), the renowned Italian-born field mashall leading the Austrian military campaign (1661-1664) against the Ottomans. Michelangelo Lanci published in 1845-46 that the shirt was belonging to the Museo Kircheriano. No information is available on how and when the shirt reached the Kircheriano.
