Why this is a
Masterpiece

The cross-legged posture with his knees slightly elevated, right hand holding a scepter, and the clothing worn attest to his high office. This distinctive form, marked by the tall headgear (tate-eboshi), the sharply cleaved informal robe (kariginu), together with the large gathered trousers (sashinuki) blooming out at the sides, are first seen in this era. Similar examples can be seen in statues of Hojo Tokiyori (from Kenchoji Temple) and Uesugi Shigefusa (from Meigetsuin Temple). It is important Cultural Property.

History of the Object
This superb piece is traditionally identified with Minamoto no Yoritomo. It was originally installed in Shirahata Shrine in Kamakura and later passed into the hands of Hara Tomitaro (also known as Sankei).
