Why this is a
Masterpiece

Only two paper scrolls of Zhao Ji's painting exist today: one is known as Late Autumn Pond, and the other is this scroll. Though in a very poor condition, the former is extremely valuable. Zhao Ji painted his works in a meticulous manner, with lightly applied washes. The composition is simple and unsophisticated, carefree and natural. This painting is representative of his unaffected style.

History of the Object
Zhao Ji (1082 – 1135), Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song dynasty, was very good at painting and calligraphy, especially flower and bird paintings.
