Why this is a
Masterpiece

The two figures of a standing man and a kneeling man are among the finest specimens of tomb sculpture in the Collection of Oriental Art of the National Gallery in Prague. Both men are clad in long, sashed robes and wide-legged trousers under the garments. They are wearing hats fastened under the chin with wide ribbons. Both figures have round holes in the hands, suggesting that these originally held weapons or perhaps work tools. It is evident from the facial expressions and postures that both men are engrossed in some sort of activity. However, the clothing does not allow for a more precise identification, so it is not clear whether these are figures of soldiers or (for example) peasants. Both figures have a number of features typical of Han Dynasty tomb sculpture. Despite the sculptures rather small size, they give the impression of a certain monumentality. The bodies are modelled in basic geometric forms and strong outlines, which contribute to the figures overall abstraction and stylization. These sculptures are masterpieces in their own right, mainly due to the realistic execution of the faces that indicate an attempt toward individualization and psychologization. Moreover, the original polychrome of both statues is well preserved.
