This is a beautiful object but above all it is an interesting historical document and very rare in this condition.

History of the Object
The seal shows a simha, a lion. This is the symbol of the Kings of Kandy.

Function
Embroidered cloth case with a sealed palm leaf cover. The cloth case contained a 'talpata', an official letter from the King of Kandy to Cornelis Jan Simons, Governor of Ceylon 1702-1706. The king must have been Vimala Dharma Surya II. Unfortunately, the letter was already missing at the time of acquisition.
