Why this is a
Masterpiece

The artifact is an especially fine piece of art with a gracious movement of the dancer.

History of the Object
The figurine depicts a dancer making a curtseying gesture with one elbow raised and the other lowered; and one hand touching her chin. Her hair is tied in a knot at the neck. It has been beautifully painted and there are still traces of yellow, white, red and black paint. Tomb figurines from the Han period perhaps best illustrate the ability to produce fresh, realistic art. When the practice of sacrificing human beings to accompany a prominent personage to the grave came to an end, dolls of wood or clay were made instead to serve the same purpose. It was thus important to represent both the men and animals that had belonged to the deceased person's household as realistically as possible. These types of figures also tell us about how people dressed and lived in the Han period.
