Why this is a
Masterpiece

This thumb guard is exceptionally decorated. Crescentic in cross section, lengthy bone or ivory plates were widely used in the North Pacific region to protect the hand holding the bow from the rebounding string of the bow. The object is decorated with geometric ornaments. There is a leather strap at the long sides to fasten the plate at the wrist and/or around the lower part of the thumb.

History of the Object
This item is part of the collection, acquired under the leadership of Baron von Asch during the Great Expeditions of the 18th century, which were supported by Catherine II of Russia. These objects – obtained by several collectors – present cultural elements of various peoples in Asia and Russian America (Alaska).

Wrist guard (this is too long for thumb and wrist guard are usually used for shooting bow). Many of the masterpiece are so fine that it is not possible to favourite all of them. I regret that there is not many things about archery which was ans is so important in Orient.
