YGM-KR003-4
Download print email facebook twitter me2day

Why this is a
Masterpiece

This roof-end tile with lotus design is a valuable resource for studying the mutual influence among and relationship between the Three Kingdoms period. This tile has a six-spade lotus. This tile could relate to the vigorous designs of Goguryeo as well as to the light gray paste of BaekjeBaekje.

History of the Object
This kind of roof-end tile is only excavated in a specific area named 'Central Tower' in Tappyeong-ri, Gageum-myeon, Chungju city. It is called a "Tappyeongri roofing tile". The manufacturing area of the spade type tile embraces characteristics of Goguyreo, Baekje, and Silla, it is very interesting that scholars do not agree with each other as to the cultural origin. Chungju is an area where the Three Kingdoms period bordered one another. As such, the tile is an important resource which suggests that Chungju was a strategically and culturally significant place where the cultures of the Three Kingdoms intersected and fused.
