Why this is a
Masterpiece

Camphuijs’s crest consists of an armoured arm grasping a hammer (a reference to his origins as a silversmith). The rim of the plate – of which at least seven examples are known, all identical – has a decorative border showing a single continuous landscape and courtesans sitting or reclining at table. The shape of the unusually flat, broad-rimmed plate may have been inspired by a pewter example.

History of the Object
The blue and white dinner service made for Johannes Camphuijs (1634-1695) is one of the thirteen famous services in under-glaze blue produced between 1690 and 1730. It is also the very earliest known Dutch armorial service. Camphuijs was governor-general of Batavia from 1684 to 1691 and died there in 1695. Born in Haarlem, where he trained as a silversmith, Camphuijs joined the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a junior merchant in 1654/1655. He gained rapid promotion to top positions, for example, spending three standard one-year terms in charge of the Dutch trading post on the Japanese island of Deshima. His fascination with Japan is shown by the house he had built for himself on the Island of Edam in Batavia Bay. The house was built in Japanese style and stood in a beautifully designed Japanese garden where he also kept Japanese animals.
