Why this is a
Masterpiece

This drum represents a rare and very large example of the type of drum that came to epitomise the heights of bronze casting in early Southeast Asia.

History of the Object
This hourglass-shaped bronze drum is also known as a Pejeng-style drum after the Balinese village of Pejeng where the largest of this type of drum resides. Most of these types of drums have been found in Bali and East Java. This highly restored example has a floral motif on the tympanum and stylised faces with bulging eyes between the handles on the sides of the drum.
