It is a an official hat to be worn with an official uniform by upper‐class men. It was designated as Important Folk Material No. 241

History of the Object
The samo is a hat, worn by government officials with their uniform from the Goryeo period until the JoseonJoseon period. In general, the samo was worn strictly as part of an official uniform, but bridegrooms were also allowed to wear it during wedding ceremonies. The samo came in both black and white colors, used for different purposes. The samo in black was worn as part of an ordinary office uniform, while the samo in white was worn during periods of national mourning. The surface of the hat is formed with bamboo and horsehair, with thin silk applied around it. The name samo means a hat made of thin silk. The rear part of the samo is higher than the front part and two wings are attached to the rear part.
