A heavenly beauty

Why this is a
Masterpiece

The maker of this female figure has succeeded miraculously well in crafting the sensual allure of this heavenly beauty in sandstone. The gossamer-thin gown, pulled away by the impudent monkey, accentuates her voluptuous curves all the more. She is about to shoo it away with a raised fly whisk. The woman is just returning from her lover. Her shoulders still reveal the marks of his fingernails – a cliché in classical Indian poetry used to express passionate love. The combination of the body’s twist and the inward-looking gaze of this heavenly beauty make this statue a highlight of the Khajuraho school of sculpture.
