Why this is a
Masterpiece

It is a perfect image; bronze covered with gold leaf. It is as beautiful as the statue CM 345-2516, but it has a different style. It has a footed pedestal, which is a typica Lanna style. Both statues are unique.

History of the Object
It was found in 1959 during archaeological rescue operations in the Hot District of Northern Thailand before the building of a dam as a result of which a whole area was flooded. The statue was found in Wat Sri Kong. The temple still exists because after all the rising water did not threaten it. All objects were first sent to the National Museum in Bangkok, but were sent to Chiang Mai in 1973. See also: CM 345-2516 and 2-2516

It was used for worship and decoration in the temple. This image of a seated Buddha displays the gesture of Subduing Mara. The fingers of the right hand point down to the earth, reflecting the scene in the life of the Lord Buddha when he conquered and army of demons, just before his Enlightenment. He points towards the Earth to symbolize the help of the Earth Goddess in his struggle. It is easily the most common representation of the Buddha in Thailand.
