Why this is a
Masterpiece

The only piece of this kind in Brunei Museum's collection since earthenware is difficult to be found in complete form due to the nature of the material, which is porous and soft.

History of the Object
Probably used by villagers inhabiting Kota Batu (the old capital city of Brunei). Earthenware oil lamps were still in use in some places in Brunei until the early 1950's. With the introduction of the metal oil lamp and kerosene, earthenware oil lamps lost their popularity.
