Why this is a
Masterpiece

Three symbolic representations - a pair of nagas, a winged conch, and a heavenly figure on horseback- have been skilfully combined into an elaborate hair ornament, one of the finest to survive from the Majapahit period.

History of the Object
The goddess and her mount are framed by the sun disc, shown as a ring of flames with a border emitting pointed rays, a traditional way to depict the sun that survived the advent of Islam. Above the disc an empty cavity indicates the spot where a precious stone was once mounted. Below the disc is a winged conch, a symbol often associated with Vishnu, the God of Saviour in Hinduism. Two descending nagas flank these symbols, their gaping jaws with sharp teeth turn outward. The association of nagas with gods and royalty became increasingly common during the Majapahit period. It survived the advent of Islam and nagas can be seen on various paraphernalia associated with the traditional rulers throughout later Indonesian history.
