Masterpiece

Guanyin is a Chinese form of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, identified here with female protective deities. The style of the sculpture is distinctive for the short period of the Sui Dynasty, from 581 to 618. The head is the eldest Buddhist object in the museum's collection.

History of the Object
Acquired in 1977 from Feliks Woźniak. Nothing is known about the earlier history of the object.
