Why this is a
Masterpiece

This print, like Utamaro's bust prints, revolutionised the print industry as his work depicted Kabuki actors in character. Today Sharaku remains a mystery and his mica backed portraits of actors are highly prized.

History of the Object
This famous print was donated as part of a collection of 2,000 objects gifted to the museum by the Hon. Walter Samuel through the Art Fund in 1923. Little is known about its history prior to it forming part of Samuels Collection.
