Why this is a
Masterpiece

A charming, although rather difficult gesture draws the viewer’s attention to the girl‘s long hair, which appears to be still wet after her bath, as it is divided into strands. This assumption is attested to by her footwear, as her high-soled sandals are of the type, that were worn to the bath. While the face shows portrait-like features, the figure wearing a transparent robe seems schematic; it is said that painters did not have access to the women’s section of the house.

History of the Object
The artist might have worked in a Mughal studio, a supposition corroborated by the delicately painted face and the treatment of the robe that emphasizes the delicacy and superb quality of the fabric. However, it seems more probable that the painting originated at the Bijapur Court of the art-loving Muhammand Adil Shah (ruled 1627 – 1656), who was associated with the court of the ruler of the Mughal Empire, Shah Jahan not only through family relations, but also rich cultural exchanges.
