Why this is a
Masterpiece

It is a masterpiece because of its fantastic composition performed in a demanding handicraft and difficult woodcut technique that had reached its pinnacle when this print was created. The print is an outstanding example of Hiroshige’s famous landscapes. Kerstin Lekholm, Conservator, Röhsska Museum

History of the Object
The Röhsska Museum woodcut collection also contains the famous series “The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road” by Ando Hiroshige. Seen here is station number 36, Okasaki. The Tokaido Road ran between Edo and Kyoto and was 500 kilometres (300 miles) long; it took up to two weeks to travel. Daimyo Processions, pilgrims, messengers, merchants and artists travelled the road. Overnight stops could be made at the stations where there were eateries, hot baths and women. Beautiful vistas and throngs of people made the road the stuff of legends. Ando Hiroshige (1787–1858) became a trendsetter in the art of Ukiyo-e through his numerous landscape prints that combined romanticism with realism. He produced a number of Tokaido Road series, but his first is the most famous – the so-called Hoeido Series, named after the publisher. The entire series forms part of the Röhsska Museum collection.
