Why this is a
Masterpiece

This is a typical drum with the shape and motifs of Heger II (Heger is an Austrian scholar who professionally researched bronze drums, he classified bronze drums into four types based on their motifs and shape. For example, Dong Son bronze drums are Type I, Tan Long bronze drums are Type II). At present in National Museum of Vietnamese History stores all types of bronze drums. The Tan Long bronze drum is also evidence of native culture preservation of the Viet people in the fight against Chinese domination.

History of the Object
The decoration on the Tan Long drum shows the same stylized patterns as on the Dong Son drum . They still clearly express the basic characteristics of the Dong Son style. These patterns, together with the custom of bonze casting (considered as a Viet tradition), demonstrate the preservation of the native culture in the struggle of the Viet people against Northern, Chinese domination. The Tan Long bronze drum with toad sculptures decorated on the tympanums show the common use of bronze drums in village festivals to pray for rain and good crops, a characteristic feature of a wet rice agricultural culture. Some ethnic minorities of Vietnam have maintained the custom of bronze drum-beating on spring festival days and during harvest time.
