Why this is a
Masterpiece

This magnificent gilt sculpture was made by His Eminence First Undur Gegeen Zanabazar in the 17th century. The artwork was made as one whole piece, demonstrating the artist’s incredible skill for creating sculptural works using just a single cast. Zanabazar’s unsurpassed skill for detail and for capturing the curves of human bodies and faces is exquisitely demonstrated in this work. The folds of cloth around the deities’ body have also been executed with wonderful texture. This sculpture is a masterpiece for its aesthetic accomplishment that works to perfectly expresses the complex and abstract Buddhist concept of union and bliss.

History of the Object
The unique sculpture depicts the deity Demchiggarav (Sitasamvara) in union with his consort. He holds two jars containing eternal nectar and she holds a skullcap in her right hand. The position of union is a metaphor for the goal of Tantric meditation, representing the fusion of the male principle of active compassion with the female principle of wisdom.
