Why this is a
Masterpiece

This is one of the representative works of Qiu Ying (about 1493-1560). Qiu Ying, together with three other painters, was honored as one of the four leading painters of the MingDynasty (1368 – 1644) in the Region of Wu (nowadays, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces). Surrounded with red maple trees, a Chinese scholar-bureaucrat in plain official clothes is sitting on a little boat and is busy fishing. The serenity and tranquility embodied in the painting has demonstrated the longing for solitude of Chinese scholar-bureaucrats. What’s more, there are many stamps on the painting, such as stamps of Emperor Qianlong and Zeng Guofan (an eminent Han Chinese official, military general, and devout Confucian scholar of the late Qing Dynasty in China), revealing the manner and style of collecting pieces of art and their appreciation by collectors in the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911).

History of the Object
From the words and stamps on the painting, it can be inferred that this painting was once collected and appreciated by the Emperor Qianlong. Later, it was collected by He Shi (a Successful Candidate of the Imperial Examination and Governor of Ji’an County), a man born in Jiangyin, Hunan Province. The third year in the Regency of the Tongzhi Emperor (1864), He Shi sent this painting as a gift to Zeng Guofan (an eminent Han Chinese official, military general, and devout Confucian scholar of the late Qing Dynasty in China). Zeng Guofan then gave it to his brother Zeng Guoquan. Finally, the piece of art was collected by Hunan Provincial Museum.
