Why this is a
Masterpiece

The sculpture originally decorated the wall of a temple and probably stood in a niche. It was certainly an architectural ornament rather than a cult figure to be ritually venerated. The elephant-headed deity is squatting on a throne; in his hands he holds a lotus flower, an axe, a pot containing rice cakes, and his tusk, which has been broken off. He is snatching at the sweetmeats with his trunk, and a snake is coiled around his body.

History of the Object
Ganesha remains one of the most popular gods in Hindu India. He is believed to overcome obstacles and is seen as the deity of the threshold. He is the first god to be invoked when a new start is made or a ritual performed. All religious texts begin with an invocation of Ganesha.
