Ivory covers the face and hands of the Virgin and Child. The form is of a type known as a mannequin de bastidor, which requires being dressed on different special occasions. It is also light in weight to enable the bearers to carry her throughout the town. The face of the Virgin is framed with an elaborate rostrillo, an oblong adornment of rays of light made of gold, silver, and precious stones. This is a symbol exclusively used for statuaries depicting the Virgin.
