Why this is a
Masterpiece

A famous image from the first edition of the Tokaido by Hiroshige published by Hoeido c1833/4. The image shows a group of coolies and a traveller caught in a sudden rain shower.

History of the Object
This print was donated as part of a collection of 2,000 objects gifted to the museum by the Hon. Walter Samuel through the Art Fund in 1923. The print is one of a complete edition of the fifty-three stations of the Tokaido Way in the collection. While it has been at the museum it has been displayed in 1977, 2006 and as part of a touring show of Japanese Prints.
