Why this is a
Masterpiece

Figured silks like this one enriched still with silver and gold threads were greatly prized fabrics which contributed to the splendour of interior decorations as well as luxurious vestments which were appreciated both in the Empire as well as in the West. In fact Italian production and export centers like Genoa and Venice aimed to copy ottoman patterns in their own pieces and on the other side, influenced also Ottoman production.

History of the Object
The most famous place of silk manufacture in the 16th century in Ottoman Turkey was Bursa, though Istanbul also produced some important silks. This piece presents, on a red ground, a pattern of oval medallions holding pomegranates and floral motifs framed by intertwining cords. The motifs show shades of blue and yellow being partially brocaded with silver thread wefts. An important characteristic of this panel is the European influence which can be observed in the use of the cord and pomegranate motifs. The reciprocal influence in textiles (silks and velvets) between Ottoman Turkey and Italy, confirms their economic and artistic importance in East-West trade.
