Carved red lacquer box

Why this is a
Masterpiece

The object is a very fine carved red lacquer box with a cover. The cover is minutely carved with a medallion depicting The Feast of the Immortals in the paradise on Mount Kunlun. The scene is set within a key-fret border and surrounded by a lotus lappet band. The sides of the box and cover are similarly decorated with a densely scrolling floral design and the interior and the base are lacquered black. The theme of the depicted scene as well as the fine carving of this masterpiece suggest that is was produced during the Qianlong era.

History of the Object
The object was displayed at the world exhibition in Paris in 1878 and later acquired by Jing Li for the Museum.
