Why this is a
Masterpiece

This magnificent vase, may be unique for its size. It represents the highly developed porcelain-making skills of the Qianlong period (1736 - 1795). It has a straight neck, bulbous body and foot ring which give it the name of tianqiu ping or "globular vase." The vase was made by covering the surface with a fine-textured, snow-white glaze and then by painting the decoration in pink, green, white and brown colours, a palette known as “Famille rose”. It is finely painted with flowering branches of peaches with a bat flying. Peaches and bats, like so many of the subjects of decorative Chinese art, are highly auspicious.

History of the Object
The vase is part of a lot from Imperial buildings in Peking at the time of the Boxer War in 1900. First kept at the Italian army headquarter in Tientsin, they were then sent to Naples when troops returned home and were later given to the Museum.
