Realism and austerity, and through the character, evocation of the class of the literati and civil functionaries in the service of the State, brought up in the purely Confucian ethics of the Choson period.

History of the Object
Cho Man-yong was the older brother of the regent Cho In-yong (1782-1850) and father- in-law of a king who never ruled – Prince Ik jong, the son of King Sunjo (r.1800-1834). Minister on various occasions, and notorious for his strictness and intransigence, Cho Man-yong was painted a year before he died.
