Why this is a
Masterpiece

The jacket is a dark brown, white and red long-sleeved upper garment made of abaca (Musa textiles). It is heavily decorated with mother-of-pearl discs forming various geometric designs on the front and back portions. A strip of cloth embroidered with red cotton threads are attached on the neckline. The neck, cuffs and bottoms of the jacket are lined with glass beads. This jacket is an example of the intricate abaca upper garments worn by men of the Tagakaolo ethnolinguistic group belonging to the upper class. It was worn during special occasions and rituals. Its intricateness is a manifestation of the passion and skill of the Tagakaolo weavers. The shell discs heavily decorated on both the front and the back of the garment are meticulously stitched on the fabric using abaca fiber forming traditional motifs and designs.

History of the Object
The jacket was purchased by O.V. Wood in the early part of 20th century in Davao. It is now on display at the Habi't Saplot Gallery, Museum of the Filipino People.
