Why this is a
Masterpiece

A fine ivory okimono of the Meiji period (1868-1912), a woodsman, performed with great technical skill.

History of the Object
It was not until the late 19th Century that a huge and sudden foreign demand for these ornamental objects saw an increase in the quantity of styles and materials used for Okimono. The best Okimono have a mixture of wood, ivory or metal with fine inlay. Those pieces produced during the golden age of Okimono (1880-1920) often reflect two cultures: the West in style and influence and the East in technical skill. The Japanese artisans often used scenes from Japanese daily life.
