Why this is a
Masterpiece

This piece is simple but full of splendor. With exquisite design and rich symbolism, the bed canopy brings about blessings and comfort. Altogether, twelve lifelike figures are depicted on this over two-meter-long bed canopy. Two household folktales are embodied in the bed canopy's design: one is about a man winning the first place in the Imperial examination and the other is about the Queen Mother of the West (an ancient Chinese Goddess and the dispenser of prosperity, longevity, and eternal bliss) bringing babies to women in childbirth. In addition, decorated on the bed canopy are some designs manifesting the unique Chinese auspicious culture, such as bats (symbolizing blessings, since blessings and bats share the same pronunciation in Chinese), clouds (symbolizing fortune, since fortune and clouds share the same pronunciation in Chinese), cranes (symbolizing longevity) and bamboo (symbolizing that one’s career would be in the ascendance).

History of the Object
Chinese embroidery enjoys a very long history. This embroidered bed canopy belongs to the Han Xiu Style of the northern region of Hunan Province. It is one of the ten famous embroidery styles in China.
