Why this is a
Masterpiece

This collection of calligraphy and paintings by Chen Chun and Shi Tao includes ink paintings of flora and fauna with corresponding inscriptions. Chen Chun took simple natural plants and flowers such as orchids, lotus, hydrangea and plum blossoms and turns them into breathtaking paintings with strong themes and profound simplicity. Although rarely can anyone appreciate and praise the carefree style of using ink, anyone can tell the art gives off a refreshing and distinct feel, with a picturesque beauty that lasts in one’s mind long after viewing the work. Later these paintings were greatly admired by Shi Tao, who in imitation of the style added to the collection plantains, bamboo, and wrote captions for the paintings. From his works, one can acknowledge his high esteem for Chen Chun. Shi Tao’s unrestrained ink lines give off a free-spirited feel and the brushwork is especially fine. This compiled volume is a rare collection of two art and calligraphy masters of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

History of the Object
The title of this collection was inscribed on the cover by Zhang Yun. At the front of the volume Liu Zeyuan wrote: “This is a collection of ink paintings by Shi Tao, a monk from Baiyang Mountain. Today is December, 1915 and I, Liu Zeyuan, am writing this for Li Guosong; we both are travelling on the same ship.” Wu Changshuo also put down his thoughts: “Qing Bai Zhi Feng” (Unsullied and unfettered). In addition there are many comments and seals from Wu Xizai, Xu Chu, Jiang Deliang, Li Guosong, Liu Shenzhi, San Li, Li Xiang, Feng Xu, Zhen Xiaoxu and other masters.
