Why this is a
Masterpiece

These types of weft ikat textiles were given great religious and social value. The weft ikat is considered amongst the earliest type of textile to have entered Southeast Asia from India. However it was not unitl the 13th century with the introduction of silk from Thailand, that the technology began to be used in Cambodia. This piece is a high quality, rare design, and highly revered textile art.

History of the Object
This is a Cambodian weft ikat silk hanging. The weft threads were tie-dyed before being woven, hence the descriptor ‘weft ikat’. Such cloths were made as an act of merit on the part of a lay person who would have donated it to a temple for a special occasion, or were made to decorate a home during a wedding, or presented as royal gifts. The motifs on this piece – interlocking naga (mythical serpents), birds amongst trees and incense-bearing lion-type beasts suggest a ritual piece for a religious context.
