Why this is a
Masterpiece

The folio of the Jahangir Album represents the highest mastery of miniature paintings executed in the mature Deccani style and inscribed in Persian. It is a masterpiece of supreme quality that depicts the Sultan Ibrahim Adil Shah II, the ruler of Bijapur from 1580 to 1627. He was a well-known master musician who played the lute. He is depicted in a magnificent dress, sitting against a big cushion in the garden, and accompanied by three men sitting in front of him. The composition includes two European engravings of St. Francis and St. Catherine of Siena. The skilled painter showed exquisite brush work, especially in the faces and in details that shows e.g. his deep feeling for the texture of textiles. This painting represents the highest quality of the famous painter Farruch Beg´s works.

History of the Object
The miniature depicts the Sultan. It was painted at Bijapur and was sent to Jahangir, the Mughal Emperor around 1019 hijra (1610-1611).
