Why this is a
Masterpiece

The bronze mirror as an art form was the beneficiary of a long history of bronze casting. Besides the apparent function of luminous reflection, the designs on the back of a bronze mirror provide rich information about the aesthetics, thoughts, myths or legends of the period in which it was made. Bronze mirrors thus assume symbolic, spiritual and artistic significances.

History of the Object
The making of bronze mirrors started as early as 4,000 years ago during the Qijia Culture. Its production continued through the Shang (16th – 11th century BCE), Western Zhou (11th century – 771 BCE), and Spring and Autumn (770 – 476 BCE) periods. Its technology progressed rapidly during the Warring States period (475 – 221 BCE). Bronze mirror technology reached its peak in the Han (206 BCE – 220 CE) and Tang dynasties (618 – 907). Production of bronze mirrors continued until the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911) and it was eventually replaced by glass mirrors.
