Why this is a
Masterpiece

It is a perfect example of the Lanna style during its Second Period, in which Lanna art was influenced by the Sukhothai Kingdom. There are many objects from that period but this one is unique because it is covered with gold leaf. It would have been placed in the Vihara, one of the main buildings of a temple complex. The pedestal with lotus leaves deserves special mention.

History of the Object
It was found in 1959 during an archaeological rescue operation before the building of a dam in the Hot District of Northern Thailand. The statue was found in an abandoned temple, Wat Dok Ngen. Many objects were found in this temple. All objects were first sent to the National Museum in Bangkok. They were sent to the museum in Chiang Mai in 1973. See also: 96-2516 and 2-2516

It was used for worship and decoration in the temple. This image of a seated Buddha displays the gesture of Subduing Mara. The fingers of the right hand point down to the earth, reflecting the scene in the life of the Lord Buddha when he conquered an army of demons, just before his Enlightenment. He points towards the Earth to symbolize the help of the Earth Goddess in his struggle. It is easily the most common representation of the Buddha in Thailand.
Acquisition
The statue is part of the collection of objects that was moved from the National Museum in Bangkok to Chiang Mai on the occasion of the opening of the National Museum of Chiang Mai in 1973. See also: CM 1-2516; 96-2516; 328-2516 and 2-2516
