The object is an eloquent testimony to the fact that in the period of the Middle Bronze Age in Azerbaijan the horse was domesticated.

History of the Object
The first bits were made of rope, bone, horn, or hard wood. Metal bits came into use between 1300 and 1200 BCE. Originally they were made of bronze.

It is an element of horse tack, a device placed in a horse's mouth, kept on a horse's head by means of a headstall. These bits have an original form - with the head of a hippopotamus and the body of a lion.
