Why this is a
Masterpiece

The unusually elegant figure with feminine facial features is dressed in a kimono with long, hanging sleeves. The torso is covered by an armoured jacket, while the head is protected by a cap fastened with a clasp to the upswept hair. Shoes are visible peeping out from under the kimono.

History of the Object
It is rather odd that this figure, thought to be that of a dignitary, is equipped with armour (usually associated with warriors ). However, this is not the only known example of a dignitary depicted in this way.

Acquisition
This 1975 acquisition from Nystad Antiquairs N.V. in The Hague was one of the best pieces acquired by curator Béatrice Jansen in the early ceramics field. The piece came from the collection of Hague collector H.M. Knight, from whom the Gemeentemuseum had already acquired several important pieces of eighteenth century porcelain. This provenance is important enough, but is given even more weight by the fact that the tomb figure had once been part of the collection of Georges Eumorfopoulos, a leading English collector of early Chinese ceramics in the inter-war years.
