Why this is a
Masterpiece

This is part of an entire set of Buddhist scriptures known as the Chusonji Kyo Sutras. Each character of the text is written alternately in gold and silver ink between silver ruled lines on dark blue paper, a representative example of decorated sutra transcriptions of this kind. It is important Cultural Property.

History of the Object
Commissioned by Fujiwara no Kiyohira (1056-1128), the set of 5,048 sutra scrolls was donated to Chusonji temple in Hiraizumi on the occasion of its establishment in 1126. The image of preaching Shakamuni (Sakyamuni) painted on the inside of the cover is an important example of painting from this period.
