Why this is a
Masterpiece

In Japanese sacral art of Esoteric Buddhism, Five Tathagata (Jp. = Nyorai, English = Buddha) images of emanations of the absolute Buddha were playing a special role. Dainichi Nyorai 大日如来 (Skt. = Vairocana/ Mahavairocana) represents the center/zenith of the five directions of emanations of the absolute Buddha. One can see mudra (the hand gesture) of this artwork – hokkaijōin, the symbol of the Universe. This iconographic sculpture alludes to the stylistic canon from the Kamakura period XIV – XV century artworks, with realism and high artistic performance.

History of the Object
From the collection of doctor S.Kovler. He had an excellent collection of Japanese and Chinese artworks
